The Smart Mirror
A mirror that knows who is standing in front of it. Designed, built, wired, and programmed from scratch, with a Raspberry Pi as its heart.
It started with a simple thought: I look into the mirror every morning anyway, so why does it only show me my sleepy face and not the things I actually need? Weather, calendar, traffic, the next train. So I built a mirror that does exactly that.
Behind the two-way mirror glass sits a display driven by a Raspberry Pi 3. Around it: Motion and gesture sensors, hidden touch sensors in the frame, temperature and humidity sensors, and an RGB LED strip embedded in the frame. Face recognition via Azure Cognitive Services decides whose content appears, my view is not my wife’s view. And when my hands are full, "OK Google" does the job.
The best part was never the finished mirror. It was the building: Woodworking for the frame, soldering the electronics, and writing the software that ties it all together.
